Celebrating Collaboration: Newcomer Women Entrepreneurs Program & Micro-Business Cohorts

WESK is proud to announce the expansion of our Newcomer Women Entrepreneurs Program, funded by Immigration and Career Training (ICT), Government of Saskatchewan, with the launch of Micro-Business Cohorts for Newcomer Women. This initiative is a testament to the power of partnership and our commitment to supporting newcomer women as they build businesses and communities across Saskatchewan.

A Proven Model

Over the past year, WESK has worked closely with newcomer women from countries including Brazil, Cameroon, India, Iran, Ireland, Kosovo, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nigeria, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine. Our cohort model has helped women at every stage: from those curious about entrepreneurship to those already running businesses. With 94% of participants holding undergraduate or higher degrees and many balancing family responsibilities, the need for tailored support is clear.

Our program offers:

  • Free, accessible training for eligible newcomer women
  • Weekly small group sessions (5–10 participants) focused on business fundamentals, record keeping, licensing, communication, and peer support
  • Micro-credential opportunities through partnerships with Saskatchewan Polytechnic
  • Personalized guidance and networking to foster confidence and community

Introducing Micro-Business Cohorts

The Micro-Business Cohorts are designed to provide newcomer women with hands-on, practical support in a small group setting. Each cohort runs for 10 weeks, blending expert-led sessions with peer group discussions. Participants gain access to business advisors, peer networks, and micro-credentials, all while building skills and confidence for success in Saskatchewan’s entrepreneurial landscape.

This program is only possible thanks to the dedication of our partners. We are thrilled to announce that the Saskatchewan Early Childhood Association (SECA) is the first organization to sign on to facilitate a Micro-Business Cohort. Their commitment to newcomer women and entrepreneurial growth sets a powerful example for our ecosystem.

Impact and Opportunity

  • Newcomers are 1.5 times more likely to start a business than non-newcomers. In 2024, newcomers accounted for 114% of Saskatchewan’s population growth.
  • Women remain underrepresented among business owners in Saskatchewan. Only 15.8% of businesses are majority women-owned, highlighting the need for targeted support.
  • Programs like ours bridge the gap, providing resources, mentorship, and community—empowering newcomer women to thrive and contribute to Saskatchewan’s economic vitality.
